Bayelsa Queens FC beat Rivers Angels 2-0 at the Southern Delta University Stadium Ozoro, which is the temporary home ground for the Prosperity Girls as the Samson Siasia Stadium is under-going a facelift on Wednesday, with Janet Akekoromowei opening the scoring before Kindness Chinasa scored the second.
Janet put the Prosperity Girls ahead with a shot from close range in the 26th minute, before Kindness Chinasa made it two-nil 6 minutes later to double the home side’s advantage.
Despite falling behind, Rivers Angels had chances to change the game. They hit the woodwork and Agatha Thompson made a magnificent save to keep Rivers Angels at bay and to end the first half 2-0.
Agatha was largely untroubled before the break, though she had to be alert at the beginning of the second half to prevent a goal as she parried a shot for a corner kick.
Jennifer Oliver of Bayelsa Queens was sent off in the 75th minute after a second booking as she was given a yellow card in the 45th minute.
Despite playing with one man down for 15 minutes, it was Bayelsa Queens that almost got a third goal but Alaba Olabiyi’s shot went slightly over the post.
Bayelsa Queens defense held firm under pressure, preserving the lead and securing a famous victory over one of the league’s most decorated sides. The result extends the Prosperity Girls impressive run in the league and keeps their dream of another league title alive as they stay top with 15 points.
“Every game is the biggest test for this team because the expectation is very high,” Coach Whyte Ogbonda said.
“We are ready for this game against Rivers Angels, and we have played every game in the league as if it’s a cup final and try to give everything,” Coach Whyte added..
